Support Disabled Community on Dec 3

Humble Appeal on International Day of Persons with Disabilities

Show Solidarity in COVID Times

Let's join to show solidarity to persons with disabilities facing social ostracism, isolation and economic crisis due to the ongoing pandemic world-wide.

  • Keep your social media profile picture upside down

  • You could also blur out the picture or use any image to support disability

  • Add status/message of your choice to support disability and spread awareness

Hope: The upside-down image is simple to achieve and tellingly represents the twisted environment experienced by any disabled person. It also symbolizes disability as a strength that enables a different world view.

15% of the global population, i.e., approximately 1 billion live with some form of disability. 80% of them are living in developing countries, where a startling 90% of disabled children are not in school. (Sources: WHO; Global Citizen.Org)

The corona pandemic has only made this divide even worse. With schools moving to online instruction, autistic children do not have access to special school care, students requiring tactile, speech or other assistance as inputs for learning are forced to miss out completely. This is in addition to the digital divide which has systematically alienated many more.

As face-to-face, in person social interaction has reduced overall, mandatory precautions of mask wearing and maintaining social distancing has further increased social divide. This in turn may exacerbate the isolation and mental health difficulties that most disabled people and their care-givers experience.

Sample message:

  1. Watch behaviour, think DISABILITY!

  2. Commit visible support to invisible disabilities

  3. Isolated no more, I am your friend

  4. Acceptance reduces disability disadvantage

  5. Judge ability, not disability

Sample pledge:

  1. I pledge to be an enabler, not a barrier:

    • I pledge to learn sign language

    • I pledge to be a reader/writer for a disabled student

    • I pledge to coach disabled sports team

  2. I pledge to respect disabled as my equal

  3. I pledge to befriend a disabled friend

  4. I pledge to report bullying in my class

  5. I pledge to learn about disabled achievers
